Access Issues

There have been issues over the years with a home owner nearby and climbers walking through their land near the power lines. Recently a climber had their tires slashed. Be aware.

About

Although they are a bit of a drive from Victoria, the Duncan boulders are well worth the trip. I would advice you to contacting someone who has been there before if you want to go. The trail can be quite tricky to navigate and some of the boulders are a bit hidden off the main trail.

Directions

Step 1. Getting to the trailhead

Getting to the trailhead can be a little tricky. Once you make it to Duncan take a right at the first lights you hit in town. There should be a Chevron on the corner I believe. Follow this road for quite some time always keeping to the left. After about 7 minutes you should hit Genoa Bay road. Take a right onto it. Follow Genoa Bay road past the Marina and keep beyond the inlet. After the inlet ends the road should do a couple winds and then start up a hill. You will want to park about halfway up this gradually sloping hill, on the left hand side.

Step 2. Getting to the boulders

Once parked at the side of the road look for a faint trail leading off into the bush. Head over the ditch and up the other side and through a few bushes. You should come to a bit of a clearing and will see the trails continues up the hill a bit to your left. On the way up the trail there will be a couple clearings. Try to keep to the middle of the clearings. There are a couple trails going off to the sides of them, but these will just get you lost. The hike takes about half and hour if you go at a pretty good pace.

Some clearer directions, these ones are correct but here is some less ambiguous additives... Follow those directions instead of pulling over on the slope...which there is many of, drive past marina's until you come to two gates, with a giant dumpster parked at that gate. Stand facing the mountain ahead of you, look to the right, notice powerlines, that go over top of a house. Look further up and you should notice a bluff, if you can see it walk down the road to the right. You will see a bluff. The powerlines head across the mountain sideways from there. That is where you will find the trail head. So now you know where you are going. Please respect the folks in the house dont walk on there property. Here is some options. Go right down the road, untill you see that trail that is talked about. Follow it to the bluff. Or walk to the left, untill you find a trail, which is marked by a giant rope at its head, giant rocks 11/2 foot inside squared are lined up there ON SIDE OF ROAD. Follow this trail which is the long way, it is gorgeous, follow it through the cave, it will eventually pop out of the woods, and you will be above the house on an old grown over road....follow it up to the bluffs, remember powerlines are your directors... Your at the bluff, on it, and keep to the right you will find a windy trail that will take you up and to the right.......the boulders are fucking huge, you will eventually find them.

after the cave you will hit a t in the trail. Do not go right. This will take you in to private property. Turn left and follow the trail up to where the power lines turn off to your right. You will follow the trail left and up through a small patch of woods to a large moss area to a small single track trail. At this point you are around half way there. Follow the trail until you see a split in the trail (about half way up the hill) Here you can take the easier way to the lower boulder area(trail off to right) or continue up the trail to the top of the area where you will see one nice boulder. Follow the trail to find the rest.

The lower trail takes you to boulders that were never cleaned before. Really worth checking out.
